Replacement Window

Replacing your Bethesda, MD home’s windows with new energy efficient windows can be a costly project, with individual windows retailing for over $300. For a project of this size, you will have to do sufficient research to determine which brands and styles you would consider using. In terms of price, the style of window that you select will largely determine the price bracket: for example, all wood windows are attractive and somewhat luxurious, and will run you much more than a plainer vinyl counterpart. New materials like composites can also add expense to your project but will provide better longevity and easier maintenance. Of course, price is not the only consideration as your windows must stand up to daily use in your area’s climate and conditions. As a general guideline, the largest window manufacturers, such as Pella, Marvin, and Andersen, are a safe bet for a wide variety of windows.

Andersen

Andersen is one of North America’s biggest window manufacturers, with offerings in a variety of sizes and materials for your Bethesda, Maryland home’s window installation. They offer high-efficiency options as well, built with glass which is argon-filled to reduce your home’s energy costs. If your home is older and has non-standard windows, Andersen’s customization options may still be able to accommodate your needs. All in all, because Andersen is one of the biggest companies operating in the market today, they have a wide variety of resources to create custom or special-order options. Another benefit is their wide availability: you can find them through most contractors as well as in retail home improvement stores such as Home Depot. Certified installers are also fairly easy to find, since the brand is popular and nationwide. Andersen also owns related brands such as Silverline, which make less expensive windows out of materials such as vinyl. However, for the highest quality, you’ll want to stick with the main Andersen brand.

Marvin

Marvin brand windows are also available in a variety of sizes and styles, but they often come at a higher price. The company is a market leader along with Andersen and Pella, catering to standard double-hung and casement style window markets as well as offering a range of custom options. Marvin windows also prioritize aesthetics: they offer largely wood, “clad” (wood with weather-resistant coating), and composite window frames and use argon-filled glass for energy efficiency. The company has never offered a vinyl option but does have a brand-specific fiberglass option which has many of the same qualities without sacrificing some attractiveness. Luxury and vintage homes often use Marvin windows because of their materials and customization abilities. Big box stores do not carry these windows, but they can be found through independent home improvement stores as well as certified dealers.

Pella

Pella’s instantly recognizable logo is frequently seen on new construction across the country. This company offers the widest range of options at a variety of price points, including wood, clad, aluminum, and vinyl construction. Like the other large companies, you will be able to get the usual replacement styles as well as custom sizes and styles like round-top windows. In terms of availability, Pella windows are very easy to find. They are stocked in big box home improvement stores, especially Lowe’s. Pella also owns free standing stores in addition to working with dealers and contractors. Pella windows can come at a premium, but an affordable ThermaStar line is easily found for low prices at Lowe’s.

There are other manufacturers out there who command smaller shares of the replacement window market. Some, such as Peachtree, cater largely to luxury homes while brands like Survivor are known primarily for affordability. However, many homeowners prefer the major brands for availability and reliability.
